Examining Caribbean Style - French
Central artist - 5LAN
Artist description : Originally named Cinq Etwal, this artist is a descendants of Haiti and was born there in 1978 but moved to Miami, Florida at the age of 14 where he began he musical journey as a child who was always seen as different. He grew up around a mainly Haitian population in the Miami area. His rise to stardom came from his roots and his ability to switch between Haitian Creole and English within his music.
The song by 5LAN is a feel good love song representing good vibes. "Girl let me make love to you on the dance floor". This line of the tune capitulates the main idea and feel of the song. What is so amazing is about this tune and this artist in particular is that the switch between languages makes it easy to understand for both English and French speaking natives. Overall it is easy to grasp the concept of this tune.
"I'll Ya'yad (Pretty Bumpy)" is another tune which features 5LAN and a group called Carimi, a Haitian-American group. From similar backgrounds the colab produces a nice feel good song that is comical in nature. Also in this song, as all of 5LAN's songs, there is a combination of both English and French. The songs most notable lyrics that have been remembered all around the world is "Hold on right its gonna get pretty bumpy". This line in itself produces a comical nature and lightens the feel of the song.
"Rete La", a love song by Rutshelle Guillaume, gives the same out come of the language switch. Thus, the English listener gets an understanding when the artist sings "Finally I get my love, the one that I've been waiting on". The music video is a bit graphic which also gives clear explanation with an excess amount of skin displayed. Something that is notable about this music video is also the existence of jewels and the artists sensual movements and dance.
Another 5LAN song with the title of "My Life" only exhibits Haitian Creole but with careful research or just a close watch of the music video you can grasp a knowledge of what the song is about. This tune details heartbreak and infidelity. The song also ends with a powerful scene where the 5LAN uses a bat to destroy a dinner table with his 'partner' crying in the background. This song gives a "why did you do this to me" type of feeling. The graphics and many scenes tell an amazing story.
The song "Wet the Hell" is another tune by 5LAN which mainly speaks of partying and having a good time. It is important to note that most of the artists songs have a positive and feel good vibe to them. It is notable that a vast number of Haitian music or Kompa style music is mainly about women, whether it introduces a theme of love, partying or heartbreak, and so on. Haitian music is widely reversed across the world, but mainly by Haitians. Though most English speaking natives hardly understand, the vibe is still unmatched that this genre is able to give off.
